What is DS1302S Chip?

The DS1302S is a variant of the DS1302 real-time clock (RTC) IC from Maxim Integrated, specifically designed with a small surface-mount SOIC-8 package, making it ideal for compact designs. Like the standard DS1302, the DS1302S is a low-power RTC that maintains accurate timekeeping for seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and years, while also handling leap year corrections automatically up to the year 2100.

Key Features:

  1. Real-Time Clock and Calendar: The DS1302S keeps track of time and date, including automatic adjustments for months with fewer than 31 days and leap year recognition.

  2. Low-Power Operation with Battery Backup: This IC is designed for ultra-low power consumption, operating at just under 1 µA in battery backup mode, which allows the timekeeping function to remain active even when the primary system is powered off. A typical CR2032 battery or a supercapacitor can serve as the backup.

  3. 3-Wire SPI Interface: The DS1302S uses a 3-wire serial interface (CE, SCLK, I/O), which is easy to integrate with various microcontrollers. This interface is used for communication with devices such as ArduinoRaspberry Pi, and other embedded systems.

  4. 31 Bytes of SRAM: The IC includes 31 bytes of static RAM, which can store temporary data, making it useful for applications that require some additional non-volatile storage for small amounts of data, such as counters or settings.

  5. Trickle Charger: The DS1302S supports a trickle charge circuit that can be used to recharge an attached battery or supercapacitor, ensuring the clock maintains accurate time for extended periods.

Applications:

  • Embedded Systems: Commonly used in devices like data loggersdigital clocks, and time-stamped systems.
  • Home Automation: For scheduled events and timers.
  • Battery-Powered Devices: To maintain the time when the main power source is unavailable.
  • Security Systems: For logging events with timestamps.

Technical Specifications:

  • Operating Voltage: 2.0V to 5.5V
  • Interface: 3-wire SPI communication
  • Backup Battery: Supports both standard coin-cell batteries and rechargeable cells
  • Operating Temperature: -40°C to +85°C

The DS1302S is widely used in space-constrained applications requiring reliable timekeeping and low power consumption, making it an ideal choice for modern embedded systems where space and power efficiency are critical.
