What is TP4054?

The TP4054 is a linear Li-Ion battery charger IC designed for single-cell lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries. Manufactured by TP Semiconductors, this IC offers high precision and safe charging, making it suitable for applications like portable electronics, wearables, and small battery-powered devices.

Key Features:

  • Constant Current / Constant Voltage (CC/CV) Charging: Operates with a two-stage charging method, where the IC first charges at a constant current until it reaches a certain voltage, then shifts to a constant voltage phase to avoid overcharging.
  • Preconditioning for Deeply Discharged Batteries: Can detect and precondition batteries that are deeply discharged, bringing them up to a safe level before starting regular charging.
  • Automatic Charge Termination: Ends charging when current drops to a pre-set threshold in the CV stage, preventing battery overcharge and extending battery life.
  • Charge Status Indicator: Provides LED status outputs to indicate charging progress and fully charged states, enhancing usability for consumer applications.
  • Thermal Regulation: Adjusts charge current dynamically to prevent overheating, ensuring safe operation.

Applications:

  • Portable Electronics: Commonly used in smartphones, tablets, and MP3 players due to its compact size and reliable charging capabilities.
  • Wearables: Ideal for wearables and IoT devices where small, single-cell Li-Ion batteries are prevalent.
  • Backup Battery Systems: Used in small, backup power systems to maintain battery health and longevity.

The TP4054 provides a cost-effective, reliable solution for single-cell Li-Ion battery charging, offering necessary protections and simple implementation for safe and efficient charging in low-power, battery-operated devices.
