How to wire a 5 pin relay?

 The 5-pin relay is a common component in electronic circuits, widely used in automation control, household appliances, automotive electronics and other fields. Basic structure of 5-pin relay  

5-pin relay usually consists of the following parts:

Coil pin: Used to connect the control circuit, usually labeled as “85” and “86”.

Contact pins: Used to connect the controlled circuit, usually including:

“30": Common contact (COM).

“87": Normally open contact (NO).

“87a": normally closed contact (NC). 

By energizing the coil pins, the relay can control the closing or breaking of the contacts, thus realizing the switching function of the circuit.  

 Preparation of tools for connecting the 5-pin relay  

Before connecting the 5-pin relay, you need to prepare the following tools and materials: 


5-pin relay: make sure the specification of the relay meets the requirement of the circuit.

DC power supply: for powering the coil, usually 12V or 24V.

Load devices: such as light bulbs, motors, etc. for testing the relay function.


Connecting wires and clips: used to connect circuits.

Steps for connecting a 5-pin relay  

1. Connect the coil pins 

Connect the positive terminal of DC power supply to pin “85”.

Connect the negative terminal of DC power supply to pin “86”.

When the power supply is turned on, the relay coil is energized, generating a magnetic field that attracts the contacts to operate. 


2. Connect the common contact (30) 

Connect pin “30” to the positive terminal of the power supply (or the power terminal of the load device).

This is the input terminal of the relay, and the current enters the relay through pin “30”.


3. Connecting the normally open contact (87) 

Connect pin “87” to the positive terminal of the load device (e.g. light bulb or motor).

When the relay coil is energized, contacts “30” and “87” close, and current passes through the load device, causing it to operate.


4. Connecting Normally Closed Contacts (87a) 

Connect pin “87a” to another load device or to ground.

When the relay coil is not energized, contacts “30” and “87a” are closed and current passes through pin “87a”.

When the relay coil is energized, contacts “30” and “87a” are closed and the current stops passing through pin “87a”.

Example of connecting 5-pin relay

Example 1: Light bulb control  

Connect pins “85” and “86” to the DC power supply.

Connect pin “30” to the positive terminal of the power supply.

Connect pin “87” to the positive terminal of the bulb and the negative terminal of the bulb to ground.

When the power supply is on, the bulb lights up; when the power supply is off, the bulb goes out.

Example 2: Controlling motor forward and reverse

Use two 5-pin relays to control the forward and reverse rotation of a motor.

Connect the pin “87” of the first relay to the forward end of the motor and the pin “87” of the second relay to the reverse end of the motor.

By controlling the energizing sequence of the coils of the two relays, the forward and reverse rotation control of the motor is realized.


Precautions in connection 

Safety first: Before connecting the relay, be sure to disconnect the power supply to avoid electric shock or short circuit.

Identify the pins correctly: The pin definitions of the 5-pin relays may be different for different models, be sure to refer to the manual or logo of the relay.

Avoid overloading: Make sure the load capacity of the relay meets the circuit requirements to avoid overloading and damaging the relay.

Periodic Inspection: Check the relay and its connecting wiring periodically to ensure that it is in good condition.
