What is UC3843B Chip?

The UC3843B is a current-mode PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controller by ON Semiconductor (originally developed by Unitrode, later acquired by Texas Instruments). This IC is commonly used in switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) due to its high-performance capabilities and flexibility, making it ideal for DC-DC converters, AC-DC adapters, and other power regulation applications.

Key Features:

  • Current-Mode Control: Offers precise control of the output current, improving stability and transient response, especially under load variations.
  • High Operating Frequency: Supports frequencies up to 500 kHz, allowing for efficient design in compact power supplies.
  • Low Startup Current: Has a low startup current of 0.5 mA, which helps to minimize power consumption during startup.
  • Under-Voltage Lockout (UVLO): Includes UVLO protection with separate thresholds for startup and shutdown, ensuring stable operation and protection under varying conditions.
  • Enhanced Protection: Built-in short-circuit protectionoverload protection, and thermal shutdown capabilities protect the device from fault conditions.

Applications:

  • Switch-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS): Commonly used in SMPS applications due to its precision and reliability in controlling output power.
  • DC-DC Converters: Suitable for use in both isolated and non-isolated converters for efficient DC voltage regulation.
  • AC-DC Adapters and Chargers: Frequently used in chargers and power adapters due to its efficient current regulation and protective features.
  • Telecommunications: Found in telecom power supplies, which require high efficiency and robust performance.

The UC3843B is a reliable and flexible choice for designing high-efficiency, regulated power supplies across various applications, known for its ease of use, integrated protections, and precision current control.
